What it requires
AI systems that function as components within the large-scale EU IT systems named in Annex X and were in use before August 2, 2027 must be brought into compliance with the AI Act by the deadline. This applies only to systems already in operation as part of these specified IT infrastructure systems. Operators must audit their deployed AI components, identify those within scope, and remediate gaps in compliance—whether through updates, replacement, or removal—before the deadline passes.
Who it binds
Organizations operating the large-scale EU information systems explicitly listed in Annex X of the AI Act. This typically includes national and EU-level public authorities, law enforcement bodies, and critical infrastructure operators that maintain these systems. Internal teams responsible: IT operations, information security, AI governance, and legal compliance. Responsibility flows to the entity that operates the system, not necessarily the AI vendor.

Obtain Annex X of the EU AI Act and confirm whether your organization operates any listed large-scale IT systems.
Audit your deployed AI components to identify which were placed on the market before August 2, 2027.
Document the compliance status of each in-scope AI component against current AI Act requirements (transparency, documentation, risk management, human oversight).
Map remediation work needed and confirm completion is scheduled by December 31, 2030.

This deadline applies only to AI that is already a component of Annex X systems—not to all AI deployed by these operators.
